Err2 indicates a door interlock switch system fault — one or more interlock switches have failed to open or close properly. A microwave door interlock system typically consists of three series-connected safety switches that all conduct only when the door is fully closed, allowing the control board to authorize magnetron operation. If the control board detects an abnormal interlock switch logic state (e.g., the primary interlock is closed but the monitor switch is not closed, or an interlock remains closed when the door is opened), it immediately displays Err2 and prohibits any heating operation. This is a safety-critical fault — microwave energy leakage can cause serious injury — and must be handled by a qualified technician.
Common Causes
- The door latch (door hook) is worn or broken from repeated use, so it can no longer press the interlock switch actuator fully inward when the door is closed, causing a mismatch between switch state and actual door position.
- The internal contacts of the interlock switch are oxidized from arcing, or the spring has fatigued and become loose, preventing reliable opening when the door is opened or reliable closure when the door is closed.
- The door hinge is bent or the door frame is out of alignment (from frequent forceful door slams or a drop), causing the alignment between the door latch and the interlock switch actuator to deviate when the door is closed.
- The interlock switch mounting bracket is loose or a retaining screw has fallen out, allowing excessive switch movement that causes the switch state to flutter under vibration.
- The interlock monitoring circuit components on the control board (such as the sense resistor or optocoupler) have failed, falsely reporting an abnormal interlock state.
Self-Check Steps
- Disconnect microwave power immediately. Err2 is a safety-critical code involving potential microwave leakage risk. Do not attempt to start the microwave during troubleshooting.
- Check that the microwave door closes fully. Observe whether there is a noticeable gap between the door seal and the front cavity frame. Gently press on different areas of the closed door to see if a gap can be eliminated.
- Inspect the door latches (typically two or three plastic hooks on the door frame) for cracks or significant wear. If a door latch is broken, the door assembly should be replaced — self-repair is not recommended.
- With the door open, check that the interlock switch actuators (located on the inner door frame aligned with the door hooks) spring back freely when pressed. If an actuator is stuck, the interlock switch assembly must be replaced.
- If all mechanical checks pass, the control board’s interlock detection circuit may be faulty. In this and any uncertain case, contact Frigidaire after-sales service for professional repair. Never bypass or remove interlock switches — disabling the safety interlocks could allow the microwave to operate with the door open, causing irreversible microwave radiation injury.
