English

Meaning

E5 indicates that the compressor overload protection has been triggered — the compressor current exceeds its rated operating range, or the internal overload protector (Klixon) has tripped due to overheating. The compressor is the core power component of the air conditioning system. It contains a built-in overload protector that automatically disconnects the compressor power circuit when the winding current is abnormally high (e.g., severe undervoltage or mechanical stall) or the compressor shell temperature is too high. When the control board detects an abnormal compressor current or an anomalous feedback signal from the tripped protector, E5 is displayed. This is a critical protective shutdown — do NOT repeatedly reset and run the compressor without identifying the root cause, or permanent compressor damage may result.

Common Causes

  1. Supply voltage is too low (more than 10% below rated), causing excessive inrush current at startup and persistently high running current.
  2. The compressor start capacitor (single-phase AC models) has lost capacitance or failed entirely, resulting in insufficient starting torque, startup failure, and sharply elevated running current.
  3. Internal mechanical components of the compressor are seized (locked rotor); the rotor cannot turn, and the locked-rotor current immediately trips the overload protector.
  4. The refrigeration system high-side is obstructed (e.g., oil slug or liquid slug), causing excessive discharge pressure which increases the motor load.
  5. Refrigerant charge exceeds the system’s capacity upper limit, causing the compressor to ingest liquid (liquid slugging risk) or operate at abnormally high discharge pressure.

Self-Check Steps

  1. Immediately disconnect the air conditioner from power. E5 is a serious safety fault — do NOT repeatedly restart the air conditioner to “test” it while powered on.
  2. Check the supply voltage — measure the voltage between the L-N terminals with a multimeter. For single-phase units, it should be within 220V ±10% (198V–242V). Low voltage may cause overload trips.
  3. For compressors that use a start capacitor, disconnect power and measure the start capacitor’s capacitance with a multimeter’s capacitance function. The nameplate value is typically 30–60 μF; if the measured value is below 70% of nameplate, replace the capacitor.
  4. Inspect the outdoor unit ventilation — check whether the condenser fins are heavily clogged with dirt or if the unit is surrounded by debris causing poor heat dissipation. Poor heat rejection leads to high pressure and elevated compressor running current.
  5. Compressor overload involves multiple factors: power supply, starting components, the refrigeration system, and ventilation. Do not attempt to short the overload protector or apply power directly to the compressor for testing. Contact GE service for a comprehensive diagnosis using a clamp meter and manifold gauge set. A seized rotor or burned motor winding typically requires replacing the entire compressor, which must be performed by a licensed refrigerant technician.
