E5 High

E5 - ge Dryer

English

Meaning

E5 indicates a drive motor fault — the drum is not spinning. GE dryers use a single-phase AC induction motor (some newer models use a brushless DC motor) to drive both the drum and the blower via a belt. The main control board monitors motor operation through the centrifugal switch feedback signal or a speed sensor (Hall sensor). When the control board issues a start command and does not detect the expected motor running feedback within a preset time (e.g., centrifugal switch not closing, no Hall signal), or detects abnormal motor current during operation (overload, locked rotor, or open circuit), the system determines a motor system fault, cuts power, and displays E5. The dryer cannot perform any drying operation in this state.

Common Causes

  1. The motor start capacitor (typically a non-polarized capacitor rated in tens of microfarads) has aged and failed, with capacitance dropping below 50% of its rated value. The motor cannot develop sufficient starting torque and only hums without spinning.
  2. The motor’s internal centrifugal switch contacts are oxidized from prolonged arcing, failing to properly open the start winding after reaching speed or failing to make contact on the next start attempt, leaving the start winding disconnected.
  3. The drive belt has snapped or slipped off the motor pulley and drum pulley. The motor spins freely but the drum does not rotate; the control board detects an abnormally light load and triggers the fault.
  4. The drum bearing or idler pulley (tensioner) has seized, creating excessive mechanical resistance and stalling the motor. The control board’s overcurrent protection cuts power when current spikes.
  5. A partial short or open circuit in the motor windings causes unbalanced running current, triggering the control board’s current monitoring alarm.
  6. Loose motor wiring harness connectors or burnt terminals cause intermittent power delivery; the control board detects a motor start failure.

Self-Check Steps

  1. Unplug the dryer. Reach inside the drum and rotate it by hand, feeling for resistance. A healthy drum should spin easily and smoothly. Heavy resistance, grinding, or metallic scraping noises indicate a mechanical obstruction — possibly a failed bearing or a foreign object.
  2. Open the lower front access panel (or rear panel) and visually inspect the drive belt. The belt should be taut across the motor pulley and drum pulley, with no cracks, thinning, or scorching on its surface. If the belt is broken or has come off the pulleys, replace it.
  3. Check that the idler pulley/tensioner spins freely and the tension spring is intact. A seized idler pulley is a common cause of belt dislodgement and motor overload.
  4. Remove the belt and manually rotate the motor shaft by hand. It should spin smoothly. If the shaft itself is seized or has uneven resistance, the motor bearings may be damaged.
  5. Using a multimeter with a capacitance function, measure the motor start capacitor’s actual capacitance and compare against the value printed on its case. If the measured capacitance is below 70% of the rated value, replace the start capacitor. Important: before measuring, discharge the capacitor by bridging its two terminals with the metal shaft of a screwdriver to avoid electric shock.
  6. Verify the motor wiring harness connectors are firmly plugged in and inspect the terminals for scorching or blackening. Reseat all connectors securely.
  7. If all mechanical and electrical checks above pass but E5 persists, the fault likely lies in the motor drive relay or current detection circuit on the main control board. Contact GE after-sales service or an authorized repair center, providing the full model number for proper service.
