2-1 - kenmore Dishwasher

English

Meaning

2-1 indicates that the dishwasher failed to drain water from the tub during the drain phase. The Kenmore dishwasher’s control board monitors the tub water level through the water level sensor after energizing the drain pump. If the water level does not drop below the reset threshold after the drain pump has run for a preset duration (typically 2–3 minutes), the control board determines that draining has failed and displays the 2-1 error code, stopping the program to prevent stagnant wastewater from producing odors and breeding bacteria.

Common Causes

  1. The drain hose is kinked, flattened, or inserted too deeply into the standpipe, creating a siphon-lock situation that prevents smooth drainage.
  2. The knockout plug at the drain hose connection to the garbage disposal or sink drain has not been removed, fully blocking the drain outlet.
  3. The filter assembly (coarse filter, fine filter) has not been cleaned for an extended period and is heavily clogged with food debris, grease, and fibers.
  4. The drain pump impeller is jammed by foreign objects (such as bone fragments, fruit pits, toothpicks, or broken glass), causing the motor to stall.
  5. The drain pump motor winding is burnt out or the start capacitor has failed — the pump does not rotate or runs at insufficient speed when energized.
  6. The internal hose connecting the drain pump to the tub drain port is clogged with accumulated grease deposits, creating a bottleneck.
  7. The water level sensor is faulty — the tub has actually drained but the sensor continues to report a high water level, causing the control board to falsely determine a drain failure.

Self-Check Steps

  1. Open the dishwasher door and check for standing water at the bottom of the tub. Attempt to manually scoop out the water with a cup first, then absorb the remainder with towels.
  2. Inspect the routing of the drain hose under the sink. Ensure the hose is not kinked or compressed under the dishwasher and has a natural downward slope toward the drain connection.
  3. Disconnect the drain hose from the garbage disposal or sink drain connection and verify that the knockout plug has been completely removed and the port is unobstructed.
  4. Remove the filter assembly from the bottom of the dishwasher tub (turn counterclockwise to release) and thoroughly clean all filter layers with warm water and a soft brush.
  5. After removing the filter, reach into the filter sump at the drain port and feel around the drain pump impeller for any foreign objects; clear any debris from around the impeller.
  6. Temporarily disconnect the drain hose from the disposal end, place it into a large bucket, and start a drain cycle on the dishwasher to observe whether water is being pumped out smoothly.
  7. If the drain pump produces a humming sound but no water is discharged, the pump is obstructed or the impeller is damaged. If there is complete silence, the motor may be burnt out. In either case, contact Kenmore after-sales service to replace the drain pump assembly.
