E1 Medium

E1 - kenmore Vacuum

English

Meaning

E1 indicates that the motorized brush roll is jammed by entangled debris and cannot rotate normally. Kenmore vacuums have a Hall-effect sensor inside the brush roll motor that monitors rotation speed in real time. When the brush roll speed remains below 30% of its normal value for more than 5 seconds, the main control board detects a stalled brush roll, immediately cuts power to the brush roll motor, and displays the E1 code while the handle indicator light flashes. The vacuum can still operate in direct suction mode through the wand, but brush roll-assisted cleaning is disabled.

Common Causes

  1. A large amount of long hair or pet fur is wrapped around the brush roll, and the accumulated debris tightens until it seizes the brush roll bearings.
  2. The bearings or bushings at both ends of the brush roll are clogged with fine fibers and dust, increasing friction beyond what the motor can overcome.
  3. Long, stringy foreign objects such as threads, cords, or shoelaces have been sucked in and wrapped tightly around the brush roll.
  4. Large hard debris such as coins, small stones, or LEGO pieces is lodged between the brush roll and the suction inlet guard.
  5. The brush roll bristle strips are severely worn and have detached, exposing the bare roller body to direct floor friction and increasing rotational resistance.
  6. The brush roll drive belt (belt-driven models only) is broken or has slipped loose, causing the motor to spin without turning the brush roll.

Self-Check Steps

  1. Turn off the vacuum and remove the battery pack (or unplug the power cord) to ensure the machine is fully powered down.
  2. Flip the cleaning head upside down and inspect the brush roll surface for visible hair wrap or foreign objects. If present, carefully cut through the tangle with scissors and pull it out.
  3. Press the brush roll release button (usually on the side of the cleaning head) to remove the brush roll, and clean out the accumulated dust and fiber clumps from the bearing seats at both ends.
  4. Check the suction inlet channel for any lodged large debris. Remove by hand or with tweezers — do not use sharp tools to pry, as this may damage internal sensors.
  5. Inspect the brush roll bristle strips for wear. If the bristles have worn down to less than 2mm, replace the brush roll with a new one.
  6. For belt-driven models, open the side cover of the cleaning head and check whether the belt is broken or loose. Replace with a belt of the same specification if broken.
  7. After cleaning, reinstall the brush roll and ensure both ends snap securely into place. Power on and test. If the E1 code persists, there may be a fault with the brush roll motor or Hall-effect sensor — contact Kenmore after-sales service for inspection.
