E4

English

Meaning

E4 indicates a dryer moisture sensor malfunction. GE dryers have a set of metal moisture sensing bars (typically two parallel stainless steel strips) mounted inside the drum. They detect the moisture content of garments by measuring the change in electrical resistance when wet clothes contact the bars during tumbling — wet clothes have low resistance, dry clothes have high resistance. The main control board uses the moisture sensor signal to determine remaining drying time and when to enter the cool-down phase. When the moisture sensor circuit fails to detect the expected resistance changes (persistent open circuit or abnormal signal fluctuation patterns), the system displays E4. The dryer can still run in timed dry mode but will be unable to use the automatic Sensor Dry function.

Common Causes

  1. The moisture sensor bar surfaces are covered with a residue film of fabric softener, wax, or detergent shed during drying cycles, forming an insulating layer that prevents effective resistance change when clothes make contact.
  2. The insulating bracket or plastic retaining clips between the moisture sensor bars and the drum have aged and cracked from prolonged heat exposure, causing the bars to shift and making contact with tumbling clothes intermittent.
  3. The connecting wires from the moisture sensor bars have broken solder joints at the terminals or the wiring harness has snapped under drum vibration, preventing the signal from reaching the main control board.
  4. Worn front drum support or rear bearing creates uneven clearance between the drum and sensor bars, so clothes cannot reliably contact the bars in certain rotational positions.
  5. The moisture detection circuit on the main control board (typically a micro-signal amplifier and comparator circuit) has failed, unable to correctly detect the weak conductance changes on the sensor bars.
  6. The grounding brush or drum grounding wire (on some models) has poor contact, causing the reference ground potential of the moisture detection circuit to drift and rendering measurements invalid.

Self-Check Steps

  1. Unplug the dryer, open the front door, and locate the moisture sensor bars (two parallel metal strips) along the lower front edge of the drum, typically below or near the lint filter opening. Visually inspect the bar surfaces for a grayish-white waxy film or sticky residue.
  2. Dampen a soft cloth with a small amount of white vinegar or isopropyl alcohol and wipe the sensor bar surfaces to remove fabric softener and detergent residue. Never use steel wool or abrasive cleaners, as these will scratch the plating on the sensor bars.
  3. After cleaning, verify the sensor bars are firmly mounted to the drum’s plastic bracket. Gently wiggle each bar — there should be no noticeable looseness. If loose, inspect the plastic retaining clips for breakage.
  4. Check that the sensor bar terminal connections and wiring harness are secure. If you see green or black corrosion, lightly sand the terminals with fine sandpaper and reconnect.
  5. Run an empty-cycle test (no clothes): select a timed dry mode (not Sensor Dry) and run for about 10 minutes. Observe whether E4 still appears. If E4 triggers on an empty drum, the fault is more likely in the wiring harness or main control board.
  6. If the steps above do not resolve the issue and you need the automatic Sensor Dry function, contact GE after-sales service or an authorized repair center for further diagnosis. The moisture sensor bar assembly or main control board may need replacement.
