English
Meaning
F2 indicates that the microwave keypad or touch panel has detected a stuck key condition — one key signal line is held in a continuously active state beyond the timeout period. The control board scans the key matrix at power-up: film-type keypads use row-column matrix scanning, while touch panels use capacitive sensing ICs to detect finger touch. When any key channel remains in a “pressed” state for longer than approximately 60 seconds, the control board determines that key is stuck, displays F2, and disables all keypad input to prevent unintended operation. The microwave remains powered but cannot be controlled via the panel.
Common Causes
- The top membrane layer of the film keypad has physically adhered to the bottom PCB layer due to heat exposure or aging, causing particular key contacts to remain closed.
- Liquid (soup, beverages) has seeped in from the panel edge, creating a leakage path between key contacts.
- Kitchen grease vapor has condensed over time on the inner surface of the keypad, mixing with dust to form conductive deposits.
- The flexible flat cable (FPC/FFC) connecting the keypad to the control board is loose or has oxidized gold-plated contacts.
- A pull-up or pull-down resistor on the control board’s keypad scanning matrix input port has a cold solder joint, leaving the input pin floating.
Self-Check Steps
- Unplug the microwave from the wall outlet for at least 5 minutes to force a complete power-loss reset of the control board. Plug back in and check whether F2 clears.
- With the microwave unplugged, wipe the entire keypad exterior surface with a slightly damp soft cloth, paying special attention to areas around the keys. Use a mild neutral cleaner and avoid letting liquid seep into the keypad seams.
- Examine the keypad surface for visible depressions, blistering, or delamination — these are typical signs of film keypad aging.
- Dry the panel thoroughly with a clean microfiber cloth. Test with power restored in a low-humidity environment.
- If F2 persists after cleaning and resetting, the film keypad or touch-sensing module is permanently degraded. GE microwave keypads are typically integrated with the control panel assembly. Contact GE authorized service to replace the entire control panel assembly.
