E3

English

Meaning

E3 indicates the main vacuum motor (or one of the motors in multi-motor models) has exceeded the safe temperature threshold. Kenmore vacuums have an NTC thermistor mounted on the motor housing that monitors motor temperature in real time. When the motor temperature exceeds 105°C, the main control board enters protection mode, displays the E3 code, and forces a shutdown. Protection is released only when the motor temperature drops below 70°C. This design prevents the motor coil insulation from burning out or permanent magnet demagnetization from heat. E3 is a high-severity code — the machine is fully disabled until the temperature returns to normal.

Common Causes

  1. The pre-filter or HEPA filter is severely clogged, creating excessive intake resistance that reduces motor cooling airflow and causes the motor temperature to spike sharply.
  2. The dust cup is completely full or even overflowing, or the suction channel is blocked by a large foreign object, forcing the motor to run under high load near stall conditions.
  3. The vacuum has been used continuously for too long (over 30 minutes in MAX mode), with the motor running at full power without intermittent cooling.
  4. The motor intake or exhaust vent is blocked — for example, the handheld unit pressed tightly against a mattress or dense woven fabric, completely sealing the air path.
  5. The motor bearings are worn or lack lubrication, increasing rotor rotational resistance and generating extra heat.
  6. The vacuum was used in a humid environment or has ingested liquid, causing slight internal moisture that degrades insulation and causes abnormal heating.
  7. The NTC temperature sensor itself is faulty or has a poor wiring connection, sending a false overtemperature signal to the main control board.

Self-Check Steps

  1. Immediately turn off the vacuum and remove the battery pack. Let the machine cool naturally in a shaded, well-ventilated area for at least 20 minutes.
  2. Remove the pre-filter (sponge filter) and HEPA exhaust filter. Tap them over a trash bin to dislodge surface dust. If the filters are very dirty or the porous structure is clogged, rinse with clean water and air-dry thoroughly (at least 24 hours) before reinstalling.
  3. Empty the dust cup and check the entire airway from the suction inlet to the dust cup for clear passage. Look for any large debris lodged at bends. Use a flashlight to help inspect the interior of the pipe.
  4. Check the motor intake grille (usually visible after removing the dust cup) for lint or dust accumulation; clean it with a dry brush.
  5. After cooling and cleaning, reinstall the filters and dust cup, then test on standard mode (not MAX) for a few minutes to see if E3 reappears.
  6. Pay attention to the motor sound: normal operation produces a steady hum. If there is a sharp whine or metallic grinding noise, the bearings are severely worn and the motor assembly will need replacement.
  7. If E3 still appears frequently after the machine has been fully cooled, the airway is completely clear, and the filters are clean, the issue may be a faulty NTC sensor or main control board. Contact Kenmore after-sales service for inspection.
