uL

English

Meaning

uL (Unbalanced Load) indicates that the washer has detected a severely uneven distribution of laundry in the drum and cannot safely enter the high-speed spin phase. During the spin acceleration phase, Kenmore washers detect the eccentricity of the drum/pulsator via suspension displacement sensors or motor current fluctuations. When the eccentricity exceeds the safety threshold, the control board displays the uL code and automatically reduces the spin speed or repeatedly runs a “water fill–tumble redistribute–drain” cycle to attempt rebalancing the load. If balance cannot be achieved after multiple attempts, the machine terminates the cycle and continuously flashes the uL alert. This protection mechanism is designed to prevent violent vibration from damaging the suspension system and cabinet structure.

Common Causes

  1. The laundry types in a single load vary too greatly — for example, washing one heavy bath towel together with a few lightweight socks, where the poor weight pairing leads to severely uneven distribution in the drum.
  2. Large items (such as bedsheets, duvet covers, blankets) bunch up into a ball during the wash cycle, forming a spherical bundle that traps other items inside and prevents them from spreading out.
  3. In top-loader washers, clothing gets trapped between the pulsator and tub wall; in front-loaders, small items get caught in the door gasket lip, causing abnormal rotational resistance.
  4. The four leveling feet of the washer are not adjusted, or the floor is uneven. The cabinet itself has a slight tilt, so even a normal load is judged as unbalanced due to the shifted center of gravity.
  5. One side of the suspension system (suspension rod dampers or springs) has aged and failed, causing the tub to naturally sag to one side. The eccentricity is amplified during spin.
  6. The shipping bolts have not been fully removed (common with new installations), restricting the normal swing range of the tub and causing the vibration sensor to trigger abnormally.

Self-Check Steps

  1. Open the lid or door, remove all laundry from the drum, shake out and untangle all bunched-up items, unfold large items like sheets and duvet covers from ball shapes and spread them flat, then reload evenly into the drum.
  2. Mix large items with smaller pieces: pair one bedsheet with several shirts or T-shirts to promote even weight distribution in all directions around the drum. Avoid washing a single heavy towel or a single thick jacket alone.
  3. Press down on the laundry in the drum to confirm no small items are trapped in the door gasket (front-loader) or the pulsator gap (top-loader). Manually loosen and fluff items that are compressed at the bottom.
  4. Check the level of all four washer feet: press down on opposite corners of the washer top and rock it. If the cabinet noticeably wobbles, use a wrench to adjust the feet height until all four feet are planted firmly on the floor and the cabinet is level.
  5. Confirm that all shipping bolts/blocks (usually on the back or bottom of the machine) have been completely removed from a newly installed unit. If still in place, remove them and keep them for future relocation use.
  6. Observe the cabinet shake amplitude during spin: place your hand on the washer top to feel the vibration. If vibration is violent but the feet are already level, one side of the suspension may have faulty dampers or springs — suspension issues require disassembly inspection.
  7. If the uL code still appears frequently after manual redistribution and leveling, especially when triggered with a small light load, the control board’s balance detection sensor reference may have drifted. Contact Kenmore after-sales service for inspection.
