4-2 indicates abnormal operation of the circulation pump (wash pump). The circulation pump is responsible for pressurizing water from the sump and delivering it to the upper and lower spray arms — it is the hydraulic heart of the dishwasher’s wash function. The main control board monitors the circulation pump’s running state through current sensing or Hall-effect sensors. When it detects overcurrent, undercurrent, stall, or excessive speed deviation, it displays code 4-2 and terminates the wash cycle to prevent further motor damage or electrical safety hazards.
Common Causes
- The circulation pump impeller is jammed or entangled with foreign objects (broken glass, toothpicks, label paper, chicken bone fragments), preventing the motor from turning the impeller.
- The circulation pump mechanical seal (water seal) has failed, allowing water to leak into the motor housing and causing bearing rust and seizure.
- The circulation pump motor windings have aged and overheated from prolonged high-load operation; inter-turn insulation breakdown has caused a short or open circuit.
- Excessive foam in the wash water or use of non-low-foam detergent has caused cavitation in the pump impeller, leading to abnormal speed fluctuations that trigger protection.
- The circulation pump power supply harness terminal is loose from vibration or has arc-burned contacts; increased contact resistance results in insufficient supply voltage to the pump.
- The circulation pump drive circuit MOSFET or relay on the main control board has failed from overcurrent and cannot output the normal PWM drive signal.
- The internal Hall-effect sensor magnetic ring in the circulation pump has detached, or the sensor circuit board is moisture-damaged, causing loss of the speed feedback signal.
Self-Check Steps
- Disconnect power, remove the bottom filter assembly and sump cover plate, and use a flashlight to inspect the circulation pump inlet impeller for entangled debris; carefully extract any foreign material with needle-nose pliers.
- Gently wiggle the impeller by hand and feel whether it rotates smoothly; noticeable binding, grinding sounds, or excessive rotational resistance indicates damaged bearings or a failed water seal.
- Check the bottom of the sump area for oily liquid (a sign of water seal leakage) and look beneath the motor housing for water stains or rust — these indicate the water seal has failed.
- Smell around the pump body for a pungent burnt-insulation odor; if present, it indicates the motor windings have overheated and burned out.
- Verify that the circulation pump’s power supply harness connector is fully seated, and check the connector’s plastic housing for any melting or discoloration.
- Reinstall the filter assembly and cover plate, start a short wash cycle, and during the wash phase place your ear near the dishwasher door to listen for continuous pump running noise; intermittent start-stop or abnormal noise indicates a pump or drive circuit fault — contact KitchenAid after-sales service for inspection and repair.
