English
Meaning
5-1 indicates that the dishwasher detected the door opening or a loss of door latch signal during a running cycle. Unlike 5-0 (circuit abnormality), 5-1 means the door switch is mechanically in the “open” state. If the door switch opens for more than 1.5–3 seconds during a running cycle, the main control board immediately cuts power to the wash motor and heater, displays code 5-1, and enters a paused state. This is a safety protection mechanism to prevent hot water splashing and injury if the door is opened mid-cycle.
Common Causes
- The user mistakenly opened the dishwasher door during a running cycle, triggering the safety shutdown.
- The spring or latch mechanism inside the door latch assembly is aged and sticking, causing it to self-unlock under vibration.
- The door hinges are loose or sagging; the door body has shifted out of position so the latch cannot reliably remain closed.
- The dishwasher is not leveled or is not securely installed; wash-cycle vibration causes the door latch to shift slightly and disengage.
- The door gasket is improperly installed, deformed, or bulging, pushing the door outward enough to trigger the door switch to open.
- The lower rack was pushed in too forcefully, striking the inside of the door body with enough impact to momentarily pop the door latch.
- The plastic retaining tab on the door latch pawl has fatigued and fractured, unable to keep the latch in the locked position.
Self-Check Steps
- Wait for the dishwasher to come to a complete stop, then firmly re-close the door and press Start to resume the cycle; observe whether it continues running.
- Check whether the door hinge mounting screws are loose: open the door to about 45 degrees, support the door body with your hand, and rock it gently to feel for play in the hinges.
- Visually inspect the door gasket between the door frame and tub for uniform contact; look for any localized bulging or sections that have come out of the gasket channel.
- Check whether the lower rack rails are deformed, causing the rack to protrude too far and strike the door; when fully pushed in, there should be approximately 1–2 cm of buffer space.
- Check that all four leveling feet are solidly on the floor and the machine is stable with no rocking; use a spirit level to verify level both front-to-back and side-to-side.
- Manually operate the door latch mechanism (door handle) and feel whether the operating force is normal; if it feels excessively light or fails to spring back, the internal spring in the latch assembly is broken — contact KitchenAid after-sales service for door latch replacement.
- If everything above checks out but code 5-1 still appears frequently, the internal contacts of the door switch may be vibrating loose and making poor contact; the door latch assembly needs replacement.
