6-1

English

Meaning

6-1 indicates that the float switch in the dishwasher’s base pan has been triggered, detecting accumulated water in the base pan. A leak detection device consisting of a polystyrene float and microswitch assembly is installed at the bottom of the base pan. When leakage from the tub or plumbing reaches the base pan, the float rises with the water level and lifts the microswitch arm. Once the switch closes, the main control board displays code 6-1, stops all water fill and wash functions, and may automatically activate the drain pump to reduce overflow risk.

Common Causes

  1. Excessive detergent or misuse of high-foaming detergent has produced large amounts of suds that overflow the tub; the foam collapses into liquid that collects in the base pan.
  2. The door gasket is locally aged or unevenly seated; high-pressure spraying forces water through the gap, which runs down the inside of the door into the base pan.
  3. The stainless steel tub has a micro-pinhole at a weld seam or the sealing compound has aged, allowing slow water seepage during full-tub high-pressure wash cycles.
  4. The circulation pump or drain pump shaft seal (mechanical seal) is worn and leaking; water seeps along the pump shaft into the base pan.
  5. The water inlet solenoid valve diaphragm is aged and does not close tightly; during standby, a small trickle of water continues to flow in and overflows into the base pan.
  6. The spray arm has a crack or the rotating seal has aged; water sprays in an unintended direction and splashes outside the tub wall.
  7. An added water softener or its connection hose fitting has a failed sealing ring, causing drips.

Self-Check Steps

  1. Immediately disconnect power, open the door, and use a flashlight to inspect the bottom of the tub and the base pan (visible from below the toe kick panel or by removing the toe kick); determine the extent of water accumulation.
  2. Soak up the water in the base pan with dry towels or a sponge and note the water color: clear water suggests an inlet-side leak, while cloudy water with detergent foam or food particles suggests a wash-process leak.
  3. Confirm you are using dishwasher-specific low-foam detergent; follow the fill line in the detergent dispenser and do not overfill.
  4. Inspect the entire door gasket for localized deformation, age cracks, or sections that have come loose; clean with a damp cloth and check the sealing fit.
  5. Feel around the inlet and drain hose connections with your hand for dampness or water droplets; confirm the fittings are tight.
  6. After drying the base pan, run an empty short cycle without dishes; observe during both the wash and drain phases whether water re-accumulates in the base pan to pinpoint which phase the leak occurs in.
  7. If water re-accumulates during the empty-cycle test and the leak source cannot be identified, the leak is an internal seal or concealed plumbing leak — contact KitchenAid after-sales service for a disassembly and pressure test.
