7-2

English

Meaning

7-2 indicates that the main control board has detected that the water temperature is not rising as expected while the heating element is energized. During the heating phase, the control board turns on the heating element and continuously monitors water temperature via the NTC thermistor. If after a period with the element on (typically 10–15 minutes) the water temperature rise falls below a preset threshold (e.g., less than 1°C per minute), the control board determines the heating system efficiency is insufficient and displays code 7-2. Unlike 7-1 (circuit open), 7-2 means the heating loop is electrically conductive but the thermal efficiency is severely degraded.

Common Causes

  1. The heating element surface is coated with an extremely thick layer of scale (>2mm); the scale severely impedes heat transfer, preventing the element’s heat from effectively reaching the water.
  2. The incoming water temperature is extremely low (in cold northern regions, supply water can be as low as 4–5°C); the heating element lacks sufficient wattage to heat the water to the target temperature within the available time.
  3. The NTC thermistor is sluggish or its reading has drifted; the actual water temperature has risen but the sensor outputs an erroneous low-temperature signal that misleads the control board.
  4. The drain valve is not closing tightly during the wash cycle; heated water partially leaks out while cold replenishment water enters, keeping the temperature from ever reaching the expected level.
  5. The control board’s heating relay contacts have excessive contact resistance; the actual operating voltage reaching the element is lower than rated, and the actual power output is severely insufficient.
  6. The supply voltage is low (<100V AC for 120V models); heating element power drops with the square of voltage, significantly reducing actual heating capacity.

Self-Check Steps

  1. Open the dishwasher door immediately after the heating phase of a completed wash cycle and cautiously touch the stainless steel tub wall (beware of scalding); if it is noticeably warm, the heating element is working but with insufficient efficiency.
  2. Remove the bottom filter assembly and visually inspect the scale thickness on the heating element surface: a light white film is normal, but thick, rough, crusty buildup (limestone-like texture) requires descaling.
  3. Purchase a dishwasher-specific descaler (citric acid-based), and run an empty descaling cycle following the product instructions to dissolve the scale on the heating element surface.
  4. Confirm the water temperature supplied to the dishwasher from your home water heater (if the dishwasher is connected to a hot water line): the temperature should be at least 49°C (120°F); otherwise, consider switching to a cold-water connection and letting the dishwasher do its own heating.
  5. After verifying normal supply voltage with a multimeter, measure the voltage across the heating element while it is operating: it should be close to the rated voltage (for a 120V nominal model, within the 108–132V range).
  6. If descaling, supply water temperature, and voltage are all normal but the issue persists, the heating element may be partially burned internally (not fully open) or the control board’s drive capacity has degraded — contact KitchenAid after-sales service for inspection.
