During the drain phase, the control board starts the drain pump and monitors its operating current. If it detects abnormal current (overcurrent, short circuit, or no current), it displays code 8-2 and aborts the drain operation, leaving residual water in the tub.

Common Causes

  1. The drain pump motor winding has burned out from water ingress or overheating; an inter-turn short causes current far exceeding the normal value and triggers overcurrent protection.
  2. The drain pump impeller is completely jammed by hard debris; the motor stall current surges sharply, and the control board detects the overcurrent and cuts power while raising the alarm.
  3. The drain pump motor coil has an internal open circuit (winding burned through); no current flows when energized, detected as an open-circuit fault.
  4. The drain pump wiring harness connector on the pump side has severely corroded terminals due to long-term exposure to a humid environment; excessive contact resistance causes power supply failure.
  5. The drain pump drive TRIAC on the main control board has broken down and shorted; the drain pump runs uncontrollably or the status signal is abnormal.
  6. The drain pump drive relay coil on the control board has a burned-out coil winding, or its contacts are welded shut, preventing normal opening or closing.
  7. The internal thermal protection switch on the drain pump (fitted on some models) has tripped falsely, disconnecting the motor supply loop.

Self-Check Steps

  1. Disconnect power, locate the drain pump (typically at the bottom of the machine toward the front panel), and visually inspect the pump body for scorch marks, melted plastic housing, or water seepage at the base.
  2. Unplug the drain pump wiring harness connector and inspect the internal metal terminals for blue-green copper corrosion or white powdery oxidation.
  3. Use a multimeter in resistance mode to measure across the drain pump motor coil terminals: typical resistance is approximately 10Ω–40Ω depending on the model; infinite resistance (OL) means the coil has opened; a significantly low reading (<5Ω) suggests a shorted coil.
  4. Try turning the drain pump impeller by hand (reach into the drain pump inlet by feel); confirm the impeller spins freely and is not jammed by debris or foreign objects.
  5. Trace the wiring harness from the drain pump to the main control board, checking for pinched, cut, or rodent-chewed wiring.
