9-1

English

Meaning

9-1 indicates that the main control board has detected a persistently pressed (stuck) state on one or more buttons of the user interface (touch panel or keypad). KitchenAid dishwasher control panels use membrane keypad or capacitive touch designs, with the control board polling each button’s state using a matrix scan method. When a button continuously returns a “pressed” signal across multiple scan cycles (exceeding 30–60 seconds), the control board identifies a stuck button, displays code 9-1, and disables that button along with other potential erroneous inputs to prevent abnormal program behavior.

Common Causes

  1. Stubborn grease, syrup, or dried food residue on the control panel surface has accumulated on the button area, either conducting across or blocking the touch sensor and creating a “phantom press.”
  2. Water or moisture has penetrated the membrane keypad; water forms a conductive path between the membrane layers, causing the corresponding button to be continuously falsely triggered.
  3. The metal dome inside the membrane keypad has suffered metal fatigue and collapsed from repeated pressing, losing its spring-back ability and remaining in a permanently conductive state.
  4. The control panel flex cable (FPC/FFC) is not fully inserted or is misaligned at the main control board or panel end, causing shorts between row and column scan lines.
  5. The key scanning chip on the main control board (GPIO expander or dedicated touch IC) is damaged, with one input channel shorted to ground or to the power rail.
  6. The panel housing has been deformed by external impact, pressing against the button area and keeping a specific button under constant force.
  7. The communication flex cable between the control panel and main control board is oxidized from moisture, causing cross-talk among the row-column scan signals.

Self-Check Steps

  1. Disconnect power and thoroughly wipe the entire control panel surface with a slightly damp soft cloth and mild neutral cleaner to remove all grease, sugar residue, and buildup; then dry with a clean cloth.
  2. Use a hair dryer on the cool setting held 15–20 cm from the control panel to blow air across it for 2–3 minutes to help dissipate any moisture that may have penetrated inside the keypad.
  3. Check the control panel housing surround for impact dents or deformation, particularly directly above the button area; any deformation indicates the panel has been stressed and may need replacement.
  4. Leave the dishwasher powered off for at least 30 minutes to allow the internal circuits to fully discharge and the button capacitance to fully dissipate, then restore power and test.
  5. If the issue is intermittent, note whether it occurs under specific humidity or temperature conditions (e.g., when the kitchen is steamy); this indicates the panel seal is inadequate and allowing moisture ingress.
  6. If the problem persists after cleaning and drying, the membrane keypad has internal mechanical fatigue or circuit damage — contact KitchenAid after-sales service for control panel assembly replacement.
