English

Meaning

PO indicates that the refrigerator has experienced a power outage and the main control board has logged the event. KitchenAid refrigerators are equipped with a power-loss detection circuit. When AC input is interrupted for more than approximately 30 seconds and then restored, the control board records this event as a PO code and displays it on the user interface or in diagnostic mode. The code itself does not indicate a malfunction of the refrigerator; rather, it alerts the user that a power outage occurred and prompts checking whether food has spoiled due to an extended outage. The PO code typically does not clear automatically and requires manual confirmation by the user.

Common Causes

  1. A household circuit breaker tripped or a fuse blew, cutting power to the branch circuit that serves the refrigerator, then was reset.
  2. Thunderstorms or grid fluctuations causing a brief power interruption; the refrigerator displays PO after power restoration.
  3. The refrigerator power cord plug is loose or the wall outlet has poor contact, causing intermittent connection.
  4. A switched outlet is in use and the switch was accidentally toggled off and back on.
  5. Planned power outages by the property management or utility company maintenance work causing a regional blackout.
  6. The internal power wiring connector at the main control board is slightly loose, and vibration causes a momentary power loss (uncommon).
  7. Multiple high-power appliances starting simultaneously cause a voltage sag, triggering the refrigerator’s protection circuit which then auto-recovers.

Self-Check Steps

  1. First check the condition of food inside: whether frozen items have thawed or softened, and whether the fresh food compartment temperature is elevated. If thawing is evident, the outage was prolonged — discard any perishable food that may have spoiled.
  2. Press the confirm button on the control panel, or simultaneously hold a specific key combination (refer to your user manual), to clear the PO code and restore normal operation display.
  3. Check that the refrigerator power cord plug is fully inserted into the wall outlet; push firmly to ensure a secure connection. Inspect the power cord jacket for any damage.
  4. Test the wall outlet by plugging in a small appliance (such as a desk lamp) to verify normal power delivery. If the outlet is loose, replace it or have an electrician service it.
  5. Inspect the home electrical panel and verify the circuit breaker for the refrigerator is not in a half-tripped state (handle positioned between ON and OFF). If so, switch it fully to OFF, then back to ON to reset.
  6. If PO codes appear frequently during thunderstorm season, consider installing a quality surge protector for the refrigerator to protect the control board from grid fluctuations.
  7. After clearing the PO code, monitor the refrigerator for 24 hours and confirm normal cooling and ice-making operation with no other error codes appearing. If PO recurs frequently without an actual power outage, contact KitchenAid after-sales service to inspect the main control board.
