24E indicates the refrigerator defrost heater (defrost heating tube) circuit is open. The defrost heater is installed below or between the evaporator fins to melt frost from the evaporator surface. A broken heating wire or disconnected wiring triggers this fault.

Common Causes

1. The heating wire inside the defrost heater has fractured (metal fatigue from repeated thermal expansion/contraction).
2. The heater connection terminals are oxidized or burned, causing poor contact or open circuit.
3. The defrost thermal fuse (thermal cut-off) has blown.
4. The heater wiring insulation has aged and cracked near the heater in the high-temperature zone, causing wire breakage.
5. The main board defrost relay is not closing or the relay contacts are burned.

Self-Check Steps

1. Unplug the refrigerator.
2. Open the freezer evaporator cover and locate the defrost heater (at the bottom of the evaporator or embedded between fins).
3. Use a multimeter to measure the heater terminals — normal resistance is tens to hundreds of ohms. Infinite means open circuit.
4. Check the thermal fuse in series with the heater (usually a small white or black square) — measure for continuity.
5. If the heater or fuse is open, replace the heating assembly — contact service.
