- Defective start capacitor — the capacitor has lost capacitance or shorted, so the motor hums but cannot develop enough torque to rotate.
- Burned or open motor winding — insulation breakdown from thermal overload or moisture ingress causes a short circuit or open winding.
- Seized motor bearings — lack of lubrication or rust from water intrusion prevents the rotor from spinning freely.
- Failed motor control relay — relay contacts are welded shut or the coil is open, cutting power to the motor.
- Foreign object lodged in the impeller — a hard item (bone fragment, broken glass) jams the impeller, causing the motor to trip on overcurrent.
Self-Check Steps
- Disconnect power, open the filter assembly at the bottom of the tub, and manually rotate the spray arm to check for free movement. If it does not spin, remove the spray arm and inspect the impeller area for obstructions.
- Look for signs of water ingress near the motor and sniff for a burnt electrical odor — a strong burning smell indicates winding damage.
- Measure the motor winding resistance with a multimeter. A healthy motor typically reads tens to hundreds of ohms. OL (open) or 0 Ω (short) means the winding is damaged.
- If the motor uses an external start capacitor, discharge and disconnect it, then measure its capacitance with a multimeter. Replace if it reads significantly below the printed rating (typically 10-40 µF).
