Meaning
7H indicates that the wash diverter (diverter valve / switching valve) is unable to switch or position correctly. Mid-range and premium GE dishwashers use a diverter to direct the wash pump output to the upper spray arm, lower spray arm, or both alternately. The diverter is driven by a small synchronous or stepper motor that rotates an internal valve disc; the control board sends pulses to rotate the disc to a specific angular position and confirms positioning via a feedback switch (microswitch or encoder). When the control board commands a switch but does not receive the position-confirmation signal within the specified time, or detects abnormal current on the motor drive circuit, the system identifies a diverter fault, displays code 7H, and water may only exit from one position, causing uneven wash coverage.
Common Causes
- The diverter motor gear train has worn (stripped teeth or broken gears): the reduction gears that rotate the valve disc are plastic, and after long-term use the tooth faces wear flat or teeth snap off; the motor spins but the disc does not move.
- The diverter valve disc is seized by food debris, calcium deposits, small fragments, or other foreign matter; the motor cannot rotate the disc to the target position.
- The diverter position feedback microswitch contacts are oxidized or the actuator lever arm is broken; the disc has reached position but the control board never receives confirmation, retries the switch repeatedly, and then throws the error.
- The diverter motor coil is open or has an inter-turn short; power is supplied normally but the motor produces no torque.
- The wiring harness connector terminals between the diverter and the main control board are loose or have suffered water-ingress corrosion; the drive pulse signal or feedback signal cannot be transmitted reliably.
- The diverter drive circuit on the main control board has failed (H-bridge driver IC damaged), unable to output the normal drive pulse sequence.
Self-Check Steps
- Start the dishwasher on a normal wash cycle; at different phases (pre-wash → main wash → rinse), briefly open the door and listen for a short “whir” motor sound and a water-routing switch sound as the spray arms change. If there is no sound at all or a continuous “humming” stalled-motor sound throughout, both are signs of a diverter anomaly.
- With power disconnected, remove the lower front panel, locate the diverter (typically mounted above the wash pump outlet — a plastic assembly with a wiring harness connector), grip the diverter body, and try gently wiggling it to check for looseness; inspect whether the harness plug is fully seated and free of oxidation.
- Unplug the diverter harness connector and inspect the socket terminals for blackening or green corrosion (signs of water-ingress corrosion); if present, treat with electrical contact cleaner and reconnect.
- If you have a multimeter, measure the diverter motor coil resistance and compare against the nameplate or manual reference value (typically a few hundred to a few thousand ohms). A reading of 0 Ω (short) or OL (open) indicates an internal motor fault requiring replacement of the complete diverter assembly.
- Remove the diverter (requires shutting off water and power), and from the inlet/outlet ports visually observe whether the internal valve disc can be turned by hand: if it is completely seized, debris may be blocking it; attempt to clear the obstruction.
- If all of the above steps check out normally, the fault may be in the control board diverter drive circuit — contact GE after-sales service for circuit diagnosis and repair.
