F2 Critical

F2 - ge Oven

English

Meaning

F2 indicates that the oven cavity temperature has exceeded the safety upper-limit threshold (typically above 315°C / 600°F) and the temperature control system has detected runaway heating. During normal operation, the temperature sensor feeds back to the control board, which cycles the heating elements via relays to maintain the set temperature. When the control board continuously detects abnormally high and uncontrolled temperature rise, it declares an over-temperature fault, cuts heating power, and displays F2 to protect the appliance and user.

Common Causes

  1. The oven temperature sensor (thermistor) has drifted in calibration, reporting a temperature reading lower than actual cavity temperature, causing the control board to keep the heating elements energized.
  2. The heating element control relay contacts have welded shut — even when the control board removes the drive signal, the heating circuit remains closed and the element continues heating.
  3. The temperature sensing circuit on the main control board (e.g., ADC input channel) is damaged and cannot correctly read the sensor signal.
  4. A torn or deformed oven door gasket, or loose door hinges, allows continuous heat loss; the sensor zone reads lower than actual, causing the control board to over-compensate with excessive heating.
  5. Oxidation or poor contact at the temperature sensor harness terminals introduces contact resistance that skews the voltage-divider reading.

Self-Check Steps

  1. Immediately switch off the oven’s circuit breaker at the electrical panel. Do not attempt to open a hot oven door.
  2. After the oven has naturally cooled to room temperature, inspect the door gasket for integrity — check for tears or deformation. Close the door and shine a flashlight along the door seam from the outside to check for light leaks.
  3. Measure the temperature sensor resistance with a multimeter. At room temperature (approximately 25°C), the normal value is approximately 1080–1090 Ω. If the reading is significantly higher or lower, replace the sensor.
  4. Disconnect the sensor plug, clean the harness terminals with electronic contact cleaner (e.g., CRC), reconnect firmly, and test with power restored.
  5. If the sensor resistance is normal and connections are solid but the fault persists, the issue likely lies in the control board relay or sensing circuit. Contact GE authorized service to bring a replacement control board for diagnosis.
