Meaning
8-1 indicates that the dishwasher’s drain speed is below the normal level but has not yet reached the severity of a complete drain failure. Kenmore dishwashers monitor the drain pump’s operating status and drain duration during the drain phase. When the drain pump is running but the drain time exceeds the program’s preset normal drain duration (e.g., normal drain takes 60 seconds but the actual time is 90–120 seconds), the control board displays the 8-1 advisory code. Unlike 2-1 (complete drain failure), 8-1 is a warning level: the dishwasher can still complete draining, but the drain efficiency has noticeably decreased. This code is typically non-latching — the dishwasher may still finish the current wash cycle — but it is recommended to investigate and resolve the issue early to restore normal performance and prevent it from deteriorating into a 2-1 fault.
Common Causes
- The filters have accumulated a moderate amount of fine food particles and grease — not completely clogged but increasing flow resistance.
- The inner wall of the drain hose has built up a layer of grease deposits over the years, narrowing the effective pipe diameter and restricting drain flow.
- The drain pump impeller has a small amount of fibers, hair, or label paper fragments wrapped around it, reducing the pump’s efficiency.
- A section of the drain hose is being compressed under the dishwasher or pinched by the cabinet, creating a mild flow restriction point.
- The garbage disposal has accumulated sludge or insufficiently ground food waste, creating localized resistance near the drain connection.
- The drain pump motor’s start capacitor has lost capacity, causing the motor to run at reduced speed and deliver insufficient drain flow.
- The anti-siphon loop or check valve at the end of the drain hose is partially blocked, impeding smooth water discharge.
Self-Check Steps
- Remove and thoroughly clean the coarse filter and fine filter (copper mesh or stainless steel mesh). Use a soft brush to clean the fine mesh pores, ensuring no residual grease film remains on the filters.
- With the filters removed, feel around the pump chamber inlet and drain port area by hand to check for remaining food debris or foreign matter; clean everything thoroughly.
- Inspect the entire routing of the drain hose under the sink, making sure no section is compressed by cabinet side panels, the dishwasher base, or other objects. All bends should be smooth curves, not sharp kinks.
- Temporarily disconnect the drain hose from the sink drain connection and place it into a bucket to check the drain flow: the water stream should have visible force and be continuous. If the flow is intermittent or weak, there is resistance in the plumbing or the pump.
- If a garbage disposal is installed, run the disposal with cold water for 30–60 seconds to clear any built-up sludge inside, then try the dishwasher drain again.
- Consider running an empty cleaning cycle with a dedicated dishwasher cleaner (such as Finish or affresh brand) to dissolve grease deposits on the inner walls of the drain line.
- If none of the above measures improves the situation, the drain pump may have performance degradation (impeller wear or motor aging). Contact Kenmore after-sales service for a pump performance check and preventive replacement.
