oL Low

oL - kenmore Washer

Meaning

oL (Overload) indicates that the washer has detected that the laundry load weight in the drum exceeds the model’s designed capacity limit. Kenmore washers evaluate the laundry load before starting a wash cycle or early in the wash phase through the motor current detection circuit and/or the suspension system displacement sensor. When the detected load exceeds the rated capacity (typically 20–30% over), the control board displays the oL code and refuses to enter normal wash rhythm. Some models do not shut down immediately but switch to a low-speed agitation mode to protect the motor and drive system, flashing oL to remind the user to remove some clothing.

Common Causes

  1. The dry clothing loaded in one batch exceeds the maximum capacity marked on the washer nameplate (e.g., over 9 kg of dry clothes in a 7 kg model).
  2. The laundry includes items that absorb a large amount of water and increase dramatically in weight (such as bath towels, blankets, cotton comforters, jeans) — the dry weight may be within limits but the wet weight far exceeds the design load.
  3. The laundry is severely unbalanced in the drum, all piled on one side, causing the motor to detect an excessively high instantaneous current peak at startup and triggering overload protection.
  4. The user has selected the wrong wash program — for example, using the “Delicates” or “Gentle” mode for heavy bulky items. That mode has low designed torque and cannot drive a large load.
  5. The motor start capacitor has lost capacitance, causing difficult motor starting and abnormally prolonged start-up current duration, which the control board misinterprets as an overload condition.
  6. The drive belt is too tight or the bearings are under-lubricated and binding, increasing the actual motor load so that even a normal laundry amount is misjudged as overloaded.

Self-Check Steps

  1. Immediately press Pause and open the lid (top-loader) or wait for the door lock to release (front-loader). Remove at least half of the laundry, manually spread the remaining items evenly in the drum, close the lid/door, and press Start to resume.
  2. Wash the removed items in separate batches: run the first batch with lighter items to confirm normal operation, then wash the remaining heavy items in subsequent batches.
  3. When washing items that gain significant weight after absorbing water (towels, blankets, etc.), mix them with regular clothes rather than washing them all together in one load. Keep such thick fabrics to no more than one-third of the total load.
  4. Check the wash program selection: washing heavy items should use the “Cotton / Bulky / Heavy Duty” mode. Incorrectly using “Quick Wash / Delicates” may cause insufficient motor torque, triggering overload detection.
  5. Develop a loading habit: when unsure of the capacity, fill dry laundry to about one-half to two-thirds of the drum volume. After loading, press down on the laundry by hand — there should be noticeable elastic give.
  6. If oL still appears with only a small amount of laundry loaded, measure the motor start capacitor’s capacitance value with a multimeter (operate only after disconnecting power). If the value is significantly below the rated specification, replace with a same-spec start capacitor.
  7. If oL continues to appear frequently after ruling out the above factors, there may be a reference drift in the control board current detection circuit or motor performance degradation. Contact Kenmore after-sales service for inspection and repair.
