The Skyworth TV has detected a PFC (Power Factor Correction) module abnormality. Code E16 indicates that the PFC circuit is not operating correctly or its output voltage is abnormal. The PFC circuit, located at the input stage of the power supply board, is responsible for boosting the rectified pulsating DC to a stable 380V-400V DC and shaping the input current waveform to follow the voltage waveform, improving power factor and reducing harmonic pollution. When the PFC fails, the entire TV suffers from inadequate power supply, which may cause intermittent black screens, screen flickering, automatic shutdown, or complete failure to power on.
Common Causes
- The PFC boost choke (PFC inductor) has a shorted winding or a cracked core, resulting in insufficient boost or abnormal oscillation.
- The PFC controller IC (e.g., FAN7930, L6562, NCP1654) has abnormal VCC supply or is damaged.
- The PFC switching MOSFET has shorted or opened, stopping the boost circuit from operating.
- The main PFC output electrolytic capacitor has aged and lost capacitance, increasing ripple or dropping the output voltage below 380V.
- The voltage feedback divider resistors on the PFC circuit have drifted in value, causing the output voltage to go out of control (too high triggering OVP, or too low causing supply insufficiency).
- The input AC voltage is too low (below 100V AC), preventing the PFC from functioning properly.
Self-Check Steps
- Disconnect power completely and wait 3 minutes (the PFC main capacitor holds high voltage), then reconnect and power on to see if the fault persists.
- Note whether the fault occurs only under specific conditions — it is more common in areas with low supply voltage or when other high-power appliances are running simultaneously.
- Check if the TV is connected through a UPS or voltage regulator — some low-quality regulators output non-sinusoidal waveforms that interfere with PFC operation.
- With the back cover removed (experience required), visually inspect the PFC inductor for burn marks, the main capacitor for bulging, and the fuse for continuity.
