Meaning
The Skyworth TV has detected a serious power supply system fault. Code E8 indicates that the power supply board (PSU) main output voltage is abnormal or the power protection circuit has been triggered. The PSU converts mains AC power to the various DC voltages required by the TV subsystems (12V, 24V, 5VSB, 3.3V, etc.). This fault typically results in the TV being completely dead — no power indicator, no response at all, or powering on briefly before immediately shutting down.
Common Causes
- Main electrolytic capacitors on the PSU have aged, bulged, lost capacitance, or leaked, causing excessive ripple or low output voltage.
- The switching MOSFET or bridge rectifier has shorted, blowing the fuse and leaving the TV completely unpowered.
- The standby auxiliary power supply (5VSB) has failed, preventing the main board from receiving standby power to wake up.
- The PFC (Power Factor Correction) circuit has failed, leaving the main capacitor voltage too low (normal ~380V DC) and preventing the switching supply from operating.
- The optocoupler feedback or TL431 voltage reference is damaged, causing the output voltage to rise out of control and trigger over-voltage protection (OVP).
- A short circuit on the PSU output (main board or backlight driver short) causes the PSU to enter hiccup protection mode.
Self-Check Steps
- Check that the power cord is fully inserted and try a different known-good power cord to rule out cable failure.
- Observe the power indicator — if it does not light at all, this typically points to a PSU issue; if the red light is on but the TV will not boot, standby voltage may be present but main voltages may be abnormal.
- After disconnecting power, open the back cover (experience required) and visually inspect the PSU for bulging capacitors, burst tops, blackened or yellowed fuses, or burn marks on the PCB.
- Using a multimeter, check the PSU output voltages (especially 5VSB, 12V, 24V). Always ensure the PSU is fully discharged before handling.
- The PSU contains high-voltage capacitors (380V DC) that retain dangerous voltage even after power is disconnected. Do not attempt DIY repair without professional experience — contact Skyworth after-sales service.
