Meaning
Error code i20 signals that the dishwasher failed to drain standing water within the expected time. The control board monitors the water level drop via the pressure sensor during the drain phase; if the level does not fall below the empty threshold within the time limit, the system halts and declares a drain fault.
Blockages in the drain pump, hose, or check valve are the most common triggers, but a failed drain pump motor or an open circuit in the drain control path can also produce i20.
Common Causes
- Drain pump impeller jammed by debris — food scraps, bone fragments, or broken glass become wrapped around or lodged in the impeller, stopping rotation.
- Clogged drain hose — grease buildup or food particles accumulate inside the hose over time, restricting flow.
- Kinked or excessively long drain hose — the hose is pinched during installation, or its length exceeds 4 meters, reducing drain lift capacity.
- Failed drain pump motor — the motor winding is burnt open or the bearing is seized, so the pump does not run.
- Stuck drain valve or check valve — a foreign object prevents the valve flap from opening, or it fails to seal properly.
Self-Check Steps
- Inspect the drain hose for kinks, pinches, or obstructions. Ensure the hose outlet is 30-100 cm above the floor and not blocked.
- Open the drain pump cover at the bottom of the dishwasher (near the filter assembly on most models) and remove any debris wrapped around the impeller.
- Disconnect the drain hose at both ends and flush it with a stiff brush or high-pressure water to remove grease and sediment.
- Make sure the hose end is not fully submerged in the standpipe — leave an air gap to prevent siphoning.
- If the pump still does not run after clearing all blockages, the drain pump motor is likely defective — contact a professional for replacement.
