Meaning
Error code i60 indicates a heating system failure — the wash water did not reach the target temperature within the allowed time. The control board monitors the temperature rise rate via the NTC thermistor during the heating phase; if the rate is too slow or the temperature deviates excessively, the system declares a heater fault and aborts.
A burnt-open heating element, a stuck relay, or a drifting temperature sensor can all trigger i60.
Common Causes
- Open heating element — the internal resistance wire has melted through after extended use. The element shows OL (infinite resistance) on a multimeter.
- Defective heating relay — relay contacts are welded shut (continuous heating) or the coil is open (no heating at all).
- Heavy scale buildup on the heating element — in hard-water areas, thick calcium deposits insulate the element, preventing efficient heat transfer to the water.
- Drifting NTC temperature sensor — the sensor’s resistance curve has shifted so the control board reads an incorrect temperature, leading to under- or over-heating.
- Heating element ground leakage — cracked insulation causes current leakage to ground, tripping the GFCI or blowing the thermal fuse that feeds the heater circuit.
Self-Check Steps
- Run a short cycle and feel the water temperature mid-cycle. If the water remains cold throughout, the heater or its control relay is likely faulty.
- Disconnect power, remove the heating element terminals, and measure resistance across the element with a multimeter — normal range is 10-100 Ω depending on wattage. OL indicates an open element.
- Measure insulation resistance between each terminal and the element’s metal sheath (ground). A healthy reading exceeds 1 MΩ. Low or zero resistance means the insulation is compromised.
- Visually inspect the element for heavy scale deposits. If heavily calcified, run a dishwasher descaler cycle to remove buildup.
- If the element measures correctly but the error persists, the control relay or main board circuitry may be at fault — contact a qualified technician.
