English
Meaning
Err4 indicates a communication failure between the microwave control board and the touch panel (or membrane keypad panel). Unlike mechanical keypads that connect directly through a matrix scan, touch panels use capacitive sensing, with a dedicated touch controller IC that detects key presses and transmits key data to the main control board via a serial communication protocol (such as I²C or a custom single-wire bus). When the control board fails to receive a valid data frame from the touch controller within a specified timeout period, or encounters consecutive communication data check errors, it diagnoses a touch panel communication fault and displays Err4. When this code appears, touch input is completely non-functional, though the microwave may still be operable through alternative inputs such as a rotary dial on some models.
Common Causes
- The power supply voltage to the touch controller IC on the touch panel is abnormal (e.g., the 3.3V regulator has failed), so the chip does not power up and cannot respond to the main control board’s communication requests.
- The touch panel FFC/FPC ribbon cable connector is oxidized, inserted at an angle, or the traces have broken, causing intermittent contact or an open circuit on the data, clock, or power lines in the connection path.
- The touch sensitivity configuration parameters have been lost due to EEPROM data corruption, causing the touch controller to fail during initialization and never enter normal communication mode.
- The communication port on the main control board (I²C pull-up resistors or GPIO port) is damaged, preventing a reliable data link from being established with the touch panel.
- The glass or membrane surface of the touch panel has been contaminated by moisture or grease, and the touch controller continuously detects spurious touch signals, causing it to time out and drop communication.
Self-Check Steps
- Unplug the microwave for one minute then reconnect power. Touch panel communication faults are sometimes caused by electrostatic discharge or transient voltage fluctuations that lock up the touch controller — a power cycle reset can restore communication.
- Clean the touch panel surface with a dry soft cloth, removing grease, moisture, or food film. Conductive contaminants on the touch panel surface interfere with the touch controller’s capacitance sensing, potentially causing the chip to malfunction.
- Check the touch panel ribbon cable connection. Remove the control panel rear cover (disconnect power first), locate the FFC ribbon cable between the touch panel and the main control board. Pull it out, inspect the gold fingers for oxidation or dirt, clean with an alcohol swab, and reinsert fully.
- After reconnecting power, use a multimeter set to DC voltage to measure the power supply pins on the touch panel ribbon socket (typically marked VCC or +3.3V on the edge of the cable) to confirm the touch controller is receiving power. No voltage indicates a problem with the main control board’s power supply circuit.
- If the above checks do not resolve the issue, either the touch panel assembly or the main control board is damaged. The touch panel is a specialized component — contact Frigidaire after-sales with your model number to order a replacement. Replacing the touch controller IC yourself is not recommended, as the chip is typically a bare die bonded directly to the PCB.
