Meaning
F3 indicates an open circuit in the oven temperature sensor loop — the control board cannot detect a sensor signal. The oven temperature sensor is a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor mounted on the inner rear wall of the oven cavity. The control board continuously monitors the voltage across the sensor through a voltage divider circuit. When the loop is completely open, the voltage detected by the control board falls outside the normal range, and an open-circuit fault is triggered. Under this fault, the oven cannot determine cavity temperature and heating is disabled to prevent runaway.
Common Causes
- The temperature sensor wiring harness connector has come loose from the control board socket, physically breaking the circuit.
- The thermistor element inside the sensor has fractured open after aging from long-term thermal cycling.
- The sensor lead wire insulation has aged and cracked in the high-temperature zone inside the oven, causing the conductor to break.
- The wiring harness has been cut or pinched by sharp metal edges along the routing path inside the oven.
- The sensor interface socket on the control board has a cold solder joint or a broken PCB trace.
Self-Check Steps
- Disconnect oven power. Locate the temperature sensor (typically on the upper-middle rear wall of the oven cavity, visible as a metal probe approximately 6 mm in diameter).
- Remove the rear access panel cover and locate the sensor harness connector plugged into the control board. Confirm the connector is firmly seated.
- Unplug the sensor connector and measure the resistance across the two sensor leads with a multimeter on the ohms range. At room temperature, the normal value is approximately 1080 Ω; an infinite (OL) reading confirms an open sensor.
- If the sensor resistance is normal, inspect the entire wiring harness from sensor to control board for burn marks, cuts, or kinks.
- Replace the temperature sensor (GE part number typically WB21X158 or equivalent). Route the new harness away from high-temperature components and secure it with high-temperature zip ties. If you are unfamiliar with disassembly, contact GE service for replacement.
