Meaning
1-1 indicates that the dishwasher failed to detect sufficient water entering the tub within the expected timeframe. Kenmore dishwashers are equipped with a flow meter and pressure sensor to monitor the fill process. During the fill phase, the main control board energizes the water inlet valve and expects the water level sensor or flow meter to report that the target level has been reached within a preset duration (typically 4–6 minutes). If no water inflow or insufficient flow is detected after this timeout, the control board displays the 1-1 error code and halts the current wash cycle to prevent dry-heating the element and running the circulation pump without water.
Common Causes
- The household water supply valve to the dishwasher is closed or the supply line has been accidentally shut off.
- The water inlet hose is kinked, twisted, or compressed under a heavy object, restricting water flow.
- The mesh filter screen at the inlet hose connection is clogged with scale, sediment, or rust particles, severely reducing inflow.
- The water inlet solenoid valve coil is burnt out or the valve plunger is stuck, preventing the valve from opening when energized.
- The water level sensor or flow meter is faulty — water has actually entered but the sensor fails to report the correct signal.
- The main control board’s inlet valve driver circuit is damaged and cannot output the proper activation voltage to the inlet valve.
- The float switch is stuck in the upper position (overfill protection falsely triggered), causing the control board to believe no more water is needed.
Self-Check Steps
- Verify that the dedicated dishwasher shut-off valve under the kitchen sink is fully open — the valve handle should be parallel to the water pipe.
- Carefully pull the dishwasher out from the cabinet enough to inspect the entire length of the inlet hose for visible kinks, flattening, or twists; straighten the hose as needed.
- Shut off the water supply valve, disconnect the inlet hose at the dishwasher connection, remove the mesh filter screen at the port, scrub it clean with an old toothbrush, and reinstall it.
- Disconnect the other end of the inlet hose from the supply angle valve and check whether that port also has a filter screen; clean it as well.
- After restoring the water supply, start a short wash cycle. During the fill phase, you should hear a “hissing” sound of flowing water; if there is complete silence, the inlet valve is likely faulty.
- Use a multimeter to measure the inlet valve coil resistance (the normal value is typically 800–1200 Ω). If the reading is open or shorted, the inlet valve needs to be replaced.
- If all the above steps check out but the 1-1 code persists, the issue may be a faulty main control board or sensor. Disconnect power and contact Kenmore after-sales service for repair.
