English
Meaning
4-1 indicates a fault with the dishwasher’s circulation wash motor (main wash pump motor). Kenmore dishwashers use variable-frequency or fixed-speed motors to drive the circulation pump, which pressurizes water from the bottom sump and delivers it to the upper and lower spray arms for high-pressure jet cleaning. The main control board continuously monitors the motor’s operating status through a current detection circuit or Hall-effect RPM sensor after starting the motor. If the motor fails to rotate, spins at an abnormal speed, draws excessive or insufficient current, or the motor feedback signal is missing, the control board determines a motor fault and displays the 4-1 error code, immediately halting all wash operations to protect the circuitry and mechanical components from further damage.
Common Causes
- The wash pump impeller is jammed by large foreign objects (such as broken glass, chicken bones, ceramic shards, or bottle caps), causing the motor to stall.
- The motor start capacitor (single-phase induction motor models only) has degraded in capacitance or failed short/open, leaving the motor humming without rotation when energized.
- The motor winding has an inter-turn short or insulation breakdown to ground, causing abnormally high running current or earth leakage tripping.
- The variable-frequency motor’s drive module or Hall sensor is faulty, preventing the control board from obtaining rotor position data and causing commutation errors.
- The motor bearings are worn, rusted, or have dried-out lubrication from prolonged use, causing excessive rotational resistance or complete seizure.
- The motor’s waterproof seal (mechanical seal / water seal) has failed, allowing water to penetrate the motor housing and causing winding short-circuit burnout.
- The motor drive relay contacts on the main control board are welded shut, or the driving MOSFET/IGBT is damaged, preventing proper motor start/stop control.
Self-Check Steps
- Immediately disconnect the dishwasher from the power supply. Do not repeatedly attempt to restart the cycle, as the high current drawn by a stalled motor can further damage the control board.
- Remove the lower spray arm (usually by firmly pulling upward) and inspect the internal waterways and nozzles for any blockage.
- Remove the filter assembly and reach into the pump chamber inlet to try turning the impeller by hand. It should rotate freely with ease; if it is stuck or requires significant force, a foreign object is jamming the impeller.
- If the impeller is completely jammed, use long-nose pliers or tweezers to extract the obstruction. Operate gently to avoid damaging the impeller blades.
- Once you are certain the obstruction is cleared and the impeller rotates freely, reinstall the filter and spray arm, then start a short wash cycle to test.
- If you hear a “humming” sound from the motor after power-on but the impeller does not rotate (and no object is jamming it), the motor start capacitor is likely faulty. This requires a capacitance meter to measure the capacitor’s capacity.
- If the motor is completely unresponsive or there is a burning smell, the motor winding has burnt out. Motor replacement requires internal disassembly and seal work — be sure to contact Kenmore after-sales service to replace the wash pump motor assembly.
