English

Meaning

5E indicates a refrigerator defrost sensor fault. Samsung frost-free refrigerators periodically run a defrost cycle to melt frost buildup on the evaporator surface. The defrost sensor monitors evaporator temperature and defrost progress. When the sensor is open-circuit, short-circuit, or its reading falls outside the normal range, the main control board cannot correctly determine when to start and end defrosting, causing the defrost heater to either not operate or heat continuously.

Common Causes

  1. The defrost sensor (thermistor) has been exposed to a high-humidity environment for an extended period, causing pin corrosion or aging of internal components, resulting in resistance drift or complete failure.
  2. The thermal compound between the sensor and the evaporator has dried out or separated, preventing the sensor from accurately reading the evaporator surface temperature.
  3. The sensor wiring harness has been compressed or cut by ice buildup on the evaporator, causing an open or short circuit.
  4. The evaporator defrost heater itself has burned out — the defrost cycle starts but produces no heat, leading to severe evaporator icing and a cascading sensor fault alarm.
  5. The relay or triac in the main control board’s defrost circuit is damaged, unable to supply power to the defrost heater.

Self-Check Steps

  1. Since 5E is a critical fault, a defrost system failure will cause the evaporator to rapidly ice over and block the air ducts, sharply reducing cooling in both the freezer and fridge compartments. Address this promptly.
  2. Immediately transfer food to a backup refrigerator or cooler; minimize door openings to slow the temperature rise as much as possible.
  3. Unplug the refrigerator, open both the freezer and fridge doors, and allow it to defrost naturally (typically 6-12 hours depending on ice thickness). Use towels to absorb meltwater and prevent floor flooding.
  4. Once defrosting is fully complete (confirm no ice remains between evaporator fins), restore power and observe. If the 5E code reappears immediately, the sensor or control board has failed and cannot be fixed without professional service.
  5. Contact Samsung after-sales service for an on-site inspection of the defrost sensor, defrost heater, and control board. The engineer will replace the faulty parts. Do not attempt to disassemble and replace defrost components yourself — there is a risk of electric shock and further component damage.
