The fresh food fan blows cold air from the evaporator into the fresh food compartment. A fan fault will prevent the fresh food compartment from cooling down — the freezer may work normally but the fresh food section will not be cold.
Common Causes
- The fresh food fan motor winding is burned out; the motor does not spin.
- The fan bearings are seized or ice buildup is blocking the blades.
- The wiring connector between the fan and the main board is loose.
- The fan drive circuit (MOSFET or relay) on the main board is damaged.
- The fan blades are jammed by evaporator frost/ice and cannot rotate.
- Abnormal fan supply voltage (12V or 5V rail missing).
Self-Check Steps
- Open the fresh food door and listen for fan operation sound when powered on — complete silence indicates a motor or power fault.
- After powering off, manually spin the fan blades — they should rotate freely. If they cannot turn, bearings may be seized or ice may be blocking the fan.
- If jammed by ice, power off and perform a full defrost. After defrosting, restart and check whether the fan resumes operation.
- Check whether the fan connector is loose — reseat it firmly.
- Use a multimeter to check whether the fan is receiving power (typically 12V DC). If power is present but the fan does not spin, the motor is damaged.
