The Konka refrigerator has detected an abnormal defrost heater. Error code E4 indicates that the main control board has detected an open circuit in the defrost heater or the heater is damaged. The defrost heater, located beneath the freezer evaporator, is responsible for periodically melting frost from the evaporator surface. Heater failure causes the evaporator to gradually become blocked by ice, preventing cold air circulation and eventually causing elevated refrigerator temperature and a continuously running compressor.

Common Causes

  1. The internal heating wire of the defrost heater (glass tube or aluminum tube type) has melted open.
  2. The thermal fuse (thermal cutoff) on the defrost heater has blown — typically from overtemperature protection.
  3. The defrost relay contacts are burnt or the coil is damaged, preventing power from reaching the heater.
  4. The defrost heater connector or wiring is oxidized or burnt, causing a poor electrical connection.
  5. A faulty defrost sensor prevents the defrost cycle from ever starting, so the heater never turns on (investigate together with E2).
  6. The defrost control circuit (triac or relay driver) on the main control board is damaged.

Self-Check Steps

  1. Power off, open the freezer rear cover, and visually inspect the defrost heater for visible breaks or burn marks.
  2. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the heater terminals — a normal glass tube heater typically reads 100-400Ω; an open circuit indicates a damaged heater.
  3. Locate the thermal fuse in series with the heater circuit and check if it has blown (measure continuity with a multimeter).
  4. Check whether the evaporator is completely covered in thick ice — heavy ice buildup indicates the defrost system has been failing for a long time.
