Meaning
The indoor unit evaporator coil temperature sensor has failed. E2 indicates an open or short circuit in the indoor coil sensor (thermistor that detects evaporator surface temperature) detection loop. This sensor is used for anti-freeze protection and cooling/heating mode switching judgment. A fault may cause evaporator icing or poor heating performance.
Common Causes
- The indoor coil temperature sensor thermistor is damaged — abnormal resistance or fully open/shorted.
- The sensor connector is loose or has poor contact with the main board socket.
- The sensor lead wire insulation has been worn through by repeated friction against the evaporator fin edges, causing a short circuit.
- The sensor probe has fallen out of its fixed position on the evaporator copper tube, causing a large deviation between sensed and actual coil temperature.
- Signal processing circuit components for the coil sensor on the indoor main board are damaged.
- Long-term evaporator frosting followed by defrost water dripping into the sensor interior, causing sensor failure.
Self-Check Steps
- After powering off, open the indoor unit front panel and locate the coil sensor — typically a black or gray wire with the probe inserted into the evaporator fins or clipped onto a copper tube bend.
- Check whether the sensor probe is firmly attached to the evaporator coil — if loose or detached, secure it back in its original position.
- Inspect the sensor wire for cuts in the insulation caused by the evaporator fins. If found, wrap the damaged area with electrical tape.
- Use a multimeter to measure sensor resistance: values vary by temperature, approximately 5kΩ–20kΩ at room temperature (model-dependent). A reading of 0Ω or infinite means the sensor is damaged.
- Sensor replacement is low-cost and straightforward — unplug the old sensor, plug in a matching new one, and secure the probe. Contact TCL after-sales for genuine replacement parts or an on-site replacement service.
