Meaning
The air conditioner compressor protection has been triggered, and the outdoor unit has stopped operating. E5 indicates the compressor has tripped its protection mechanism due to abnormal conditions such as overload, locked rotor, or overcurrent. The outdoor fan may still be running, but the compressor has shut down — cooling or heating function is lost.
Common Causes
- Compressor overload — excessive refrigerant charge or poor condenser heat dissipation causing excessively high discharge pressure.
- Compressor motor locked rotor — mechanical seizure, bearing wear, or internal valve plate fracture.
- Excessive compressor running current — low supply voltage causing high current draw, or inter-turn short circuit in the compressor windings.
- Loose or poor-contact compressor terminal connections causing phase-loss operation.
- The compressor drive module (IPM) on the outdoor main board is damaged and cannot properly drive the compressor.
- System pipe blockage (e.g., capillary tube ice blockage or debris blockage), causing abnormal compression ratio.
Self-Check Steps
- Completely power off the AC for at least 5 minutes to allow the compressor to fully cool, then power on again. If E5 clears and normal cooling/heating resumes, it was an occasional overload protection event.
- Check whether the outdoor condenser fins are heavily clogged with dust or debris. Clean the fins with a soft brush or water spray.
- Listen for the compressor startup sound — a “humming” sound without the compressor starting may indicate a failed run capacitor or a locked rotor.
- Use a multimeter to measure the supply voltage and ensure it is within 220V±10% — low voltage can cause difficult compressor startup.
- Compressor-related faults are severe and involve high-pressure refrigerant systems and high-voltage electrical work. Always contact TCL after-sales and have a certified refrigeration technician perform system pressure testing and fault diagnosis.
