Meaning
E4 indicates a compressor discharge temperature too high protection trip. The discharge temperature sensor is mounted at the compressor discharge pipe or near the discharge port, measuring the temperature of the high-temperature, high-pressure gaseous refrigerant after compression. When the discharge temperature persistently exceeds the safety threshold (typically 120°C–130°C), the control board determines that the compressor is at risk of overheating damage, immediately stops the compressor, and displays E4. Excessively high discharge temperature usually indicates a serious refrigeration system abnormality, such as low refrigerant charge, poor condenser heat dissipation, or abnormal internal friction in the compressor.
Common Causes
- Refrigerant leakage (low charge) causes the return gas temperature to be too high, which in turn drives the discharge temperature up.
- The outdoor condenser fins are heavily blocked by dirt, or the fan is faulty, causing abnormally high condensing pressure and temperature.
- The electronic expansion valve (EEV) or capillary tube in the indoor or outdoor unit is blocked, restricting refrigerant flow.
- Internal moving parts of the compressor are worn — poor piston ring seal reduces compression efficiency and increases frictional heat generation.
- Extended heavy-load operation under extremely high ambient temperatures (e.g., full cooling demand above 45°C), exceeding the system’s design margin.
Self-Check Steps
- Immediately disconnect the air conditioner from power and allow the compressor to cool naturally for at least 15 minutes. After restoring power, if E4 reappears, do NOT continue operation.
- Clean the outdoor condenser fins — use a soft brush or low-pressure water spray to remove accumulated dust from the fin surface for proper heat dissipation. Clogged fins are the most common cause of high discharge temperature.
- Verify the outdoor fan is operating normally. If the fan does not spin or spins at a noticeably low speed, check the fan motor capacitor and the motor itself.
- If the air conditioner was recently serviced and refrigerant was topped off, a qualified technician needs to check for remaining leaks using an electronic leak detector and manifold gauge set, and recharge the refrigerant to the specified quantity.
- Repeated high discharge temperatures are a fatal threat to the compressor. Do not attempt to run the air conditioner for extended periods under an E4 fault. Contact GE service immediately for a system leak check and electronic expansion valve inspection.
