English
Meaning
E7 indicates a defrost system fault. In heating mode, the outdoor condenser coil temperature can drop below 0°C, causing frost to form on the coil surface, blocking fin gaps, restricting airflow, and progressively degrading heating performance. The air conditioner periodically executes defrost cycles (reversing the four-way valve so the outdoor condenser acts as an evaporator to absorb heat and melt the frost). When the control board detects that the defrost cycle is not functioning correctly — such as the defrost sensor temperature not changing as expected, the four-way valve failing to reverse, or the coil temperature failing to rise to the defrost termination temperature within a cycle — it declares a defrost system fault, stops heating operation, and displays E7.
Common Causes
- The four-way reversing valve spool is stuck or the solenoid coil is burned out, preventing refrigerant flow from switching to defrost mode.
- The outdoor coil temperature sensor (defrost sensor) is faulty, providing incorrect temperature data that causes the control board to initiate defrost at the wrong time or terminate it prematurely.
- The outdoor ambient temperature is extremely low (below -15°C); although the unit has a defrost function, it has exceeded the designed operating temperature limit, making defrost cycles highly inefficient with frequent misjudgments.
- The defrost control logic parameters are abnormal — typically a control board software issue or corrupted EEPROM data on the control board.
- The refrigerant charge is too low; during defrost, the system lacks sufficient heat to melt the frost within the prescribed time, and the coil temperature cannot rise to the defrost termination setpoint.
Self-Check Steps
- Disconnect the air conditioner from power, wait 5 minutes, then restore power. If E7 clears, it may have been a transient defrost logic anomaly — continue use and monitor for recurrence.
- Clean the outdoor condenser fins — heavy dust or cottonwood fluff buildup on the fin surface prevents the condenser from absorbing ambient heat effectively during defrost cycles.
- Check the outdoor ambient temperature. If it is very low (below -15°C / 5°F), the unit may have reached its operating limit. Consider turning off the air conditioner and switching to supplemental heat.
- Listen to the outdoor unit during heating mode — during a defrost cycle you should hear an audible “click” from the four-way valve reversing, and the outdoor fan should stop. If no reversing sound is heard, the four-way valve may be stuck.
- Four-way valve and defrost system repair involves refrigerant system operations — refrigerant recovery and valve brazing — and must be performed by a licensed refrigerant technician. Contact GE service to schedule a technician visit for solenoid coil resistance measurement and system pressure check, and replace the reversing valve assembly if needed.
