English
Meaning
The indoor ambient temperature sensor (room temperature sensor) has failed. E1 indicates an open or short circuit in the sensor detection loop. The AC cannot accurately read the current room temperature, which may cause abnormal cooling/heating performance or frequent compressor cycling.
Common Causes
- The room sensor thermistor itself is damaged — resistance value has drifted outside the normal range (approximately 5kΩ–15kΩ at room temperature, depending on model) or is fully open/shorted.
- The sensor connector to the main board is loose, and increased contact resistance is causing abnormal sampling voltage.
- The sensor connecting wire has been chewed through by rodents or has internal copper strand breakage from repeated bending.
- The sensor divider resistor or ADC detection circuit components on the indoor main board are damaged.
- The sensor housing is cracked, and the internal thermistor element has absorbed moisture, causing unstable resistance.
- The indoor unit air intake has been blocked long-term, creating stagnant air around the sensor and an abnormal localized temperature.
Self-Check Steps
- Completely power off for 2–3 minutes, then power back on and check whether E1 clears. Occasional interference can trigger false alarms.
- Check whether the air filter at the indoor unit intake is heavily clogged with dust. Clean the filter and reinstall it.
- Locate the room temperature sensor (typically a small black probe protruding near the intake area). Check for housing damage and whether the connector is firmly plugged in.
- Use a multimeter in resistance mode to measure across the sensor terminals: at room temperature (approx. 25°C), resistance should be around 5kΩ–15kΩ. A reading of 0Ω (short) or infinite (open) means the sensor is damaged and needs replacement.
- The room temperature sensor is a low-cost consumable (typically a few dollars) and replacement is straightforward. If you have basic DIY skills, you can purchase a matching sensor and replace it yourself; otherwise contact TCL after-sales for an on-site repair.
