The outdoor fan motor has a fault. E6 indicates the outdoor fan is not spinning or has abnormal speed, and the main board has detected missing or out-of-range fan feedback signals. An inoperative outdoor fan will cause poor condenser heat dissipation, elevated system high-side pressure, and may trigger compressor protection shutdown.
Common Causes
- The outdoor fan motor is burned out — open winding or short circuit to ground.
- The fan run capacitor has degraded in capacitance or is shorted; the motor cannot start.
- The fan motor bearings are seized or lack lubrication; the rotor has excessive rotational resistance.
- The fan blades are obstructed by foreign objects (branches, plastic bags).
- The fan drive circuit on the main board (relay or triac) is damaged and cannot output power to the motor.
- The motor feedback signal wire (Hall signal or tachometer signal) is broken.
Self-Check Steps
- After powering off, manually spin the outdoor fan blades — they should rotate freely. If rotation is difficult, check for foreign object obstruction or seized bearings.
- Check the fan run capacitor for bulging, leakage, or housing deformation — if found, replace with a capacitor of the same specification.
- Use a multimeter to measure the fan motor winding resistance: the main and auxiliary windings should each read a few ohms to tens of ohms; insulation resistance to ground should be infinite.
- Inspect the motor terminal connections for looseness, burning, or oxidation — clean and re-tighten.
