IPM (Intelligent Power Module) fault detected. The IPM converts DC bus voltage to three-phase AC to drive the compressor; a fault in this module directly prevents compressor operation.
Common Causes
- Internal IGBT power transistor breakdown and short circuit in the IPM module; short circuit from inverter output to ground or between positive/negative DC bus rails.
- Poor IPM module heat dissipation — dried-out thermal paste or heavily dust-clogged heatsink, causing module over-temperature protection.
- Compressor winding short to ground or inter-turn short circuit; IPM detects output overcurrent and triggers protection.
- Failed IPM bootstrap capacitor; the high-side drive circuit cannot operate normally.
- DC bus voltage too high (>400V) triggering IPM overvoltage protection.
- Open IPM drive signal lines (6 PWM signals) or damaged driver IC on the main board.
Self-Check Steps
- Completely power off for 5 minutes, then power on again. If E9 clears and normal operation resumes, it was likely an occasional over-temperature protection event.
- Check whether the outdoor unit heatsink is heavily clogged with dust — clean the fins with a soft brush or compressed air.
- Use a multimeter in diode mode to measure forward/reverse voltage drop from IPM U/V/W outputs to P/N bus terminals to determine whether power transistors are shorted.
