Meaning
The control board detects an open or short circuit in the water temperature sensor (NTC thermistor) circuit. F05 indicates the inlet temperature sensor signal is out of range — the system cannot read water temperature data, causing the washer to halt the current cycle and display the fault code.
Common Causes
- NTC thermistor failure — Internal open circuit or short circuit. Typical resistance at 25°C is approximately 10kΩ (varies slightly by model). Readings below 100Ω or above 100kΩ indicate a damaged sensor.
- Wiring harness connector issues — Loose, corroded, or oxidized pins at the connector between the thermistor and the control board.
- Broken wiring — Wiring chafed or broken due to vibration, especially near the motor or suspension dampers.
- Control board failure — Faulty voltage divider resistors or cold solder joints on the sensor circuit (less common).
Self-Check Steps
- Power safety — Unplug the washer and wait 5 minutes for the control board capacitors to discharge.
- Inspect the connector — Remove the top panel or rear service cover. Locate the water temperature sensor harness connector (typically near the inlet valve or at the bottom of the tub). Disconnect and reconnect it; check pins for oxidation or corrosion.
- Measure thermistor resistance — Disconnect the sensor from the harness. Set your multimeter to resistance mode and measure across the two sensor pins. At room temperature (25°C), the reading should be 8kΩ–12kΩ. Submerge the sensor in warm water (~40°C); resistance should drop to approximately 5kΩ–6kΩ. Submerge in ice water; resistance should rise above 20kΩ. A stuck or wildly out-of-range reading means the thermistor is defective and must be replaced.
- Check harness continuity — Set the multimeter to continuity mode and verify that each wire from the connector to the control board terminal is continuous with no shorts to ground or other wires.
- Replace the thermistor — If resistance readings are abnormal and the harness checks out, replace the water temperature sensor (use the Whirlpool genuine part specified for your model). Reconnect the harness after replacement.
- Replace the control board — If the sensor and harness are both confirmed good but the F05 code persists, the control board is likely at fault and requires replacement or repair.
