10-1 - kitchenaid Dishwasher

English

Meaning

10-1 indicates that the main control board has detected a vent wax motor fault. Certain KitchenAid dishwasher models use a wax-motor-driven vent during the drying phase. A wax motor is a linear actuator in which a PTC heating element heats paraffin wax, causing it to expand and push a piston. When energized, the wax melts and expands within approximately 30–90 seconds, driving a linkage that opens the vent flap at the top of the tub to allow moist hot air to escape and enhance drying performance. The control board monitors the wax motor’s actuation state via a microswitch or current sensing after driving it; if the vent flap does not reach the “open” position within the expected time, it displays code 10-1.

Common Causes

  1. The internal PTC heating element in the wax motor has aged and failed; it does not heat up when energized, so the wax cannot melt and expand.
  2. The linkage rod between the wax motor and the vent flap has become disconnected, broken, or stuck; the wax motor extends and retracts normally but the flap is not being driven.
  3. The vent flap itself is stuck shut by sticky residue formed during the drying process (dried detergent and rinse aid residue); the force required to open it exceeds the wax motor’s thrust.
  4. The vent flap position detection microswitch has oxidized contacts or its mounting position has shifted; the flap opens but the feedback signal does not reach the control board.
  5. The wax motor power supply harness connector is loose or has poor contact; the wax motor is not receiving operating voltage.
  6. The relay or TRIAC on the main control board that drives the wax motor has failed and cannot supply power to the wax motor.

Self-Check Steps

  1. Observe the drying results after a completed cycle: if there are large amounts of water droplet condensation remaining on dishes and the tub walls and code 10-1 is flashing at the end of the cycle, it indicates the drying vent is not functioning.
  2. Locate the vent flap position at the top or side of the tub (typically behind the control panel or on the upper door edge); gently push and pull the flap by hand to check whether it opens and closes freely and whether there is any resistance or sticky feel.
  3. Remove the dishwasher’s top cover or control panel (disconnect power first), find the vent wax motor assembly, and check that the connection between the wax motor and the vent flap linkage is intact and not disconnected.
  4. Check that the wax motor power harness connector is firmly plugged in and that the harness has not been scorched by high-temperature areas of the tub.
  5. Use a multimeter in resistance mode to measure the wax motor PTC heating element resistance: typical cold resistance is approximately 500Ω–2kΩ; an infinite reading indicates the PTC has burned out and the wax motor needs replacement.
  6. If the vent flap mechanism is normal and the wax motor still responds when powered but the code does not clear, the position detection switch may be faulty — contact KitchenAid after-sales service for vent flap assembly replacement.
