English

Meaning

3-2 indicates that the main control board has detected a short circuit in the temperature sensor (NTC thermistor) circuit. Under normal operation, the NTC thermistor resistance fluctuates between several thousand and tens of thousands of ohms as water temperature changes. When the control board detects an abnormally low resistance (close to zero ohms), indicating a short in the thermistor loop, it displays code 3-2 and disables the heating function because the temperature reading is deemed unreliable for safe heating control.

Common Causes

  1. The NTC thermistor has experienced internal breakdown and shorting; the PN junction or resistive element is permanently shorted, resulting in near-zero resistance.
  2. The NTC sensor wiring harness insulation has been cut by the sharp metal edge of the tub, exposing two wire conductors that contact each other and create a short.
  3. Water or moisture has entered the NTC connector housing; moisture forms a low-impedance conductive path between the pins, equivalent to a short signal.
  4. The NTC thermistor probe seal has failed, allowing moisture to penetrate the sensor encapsulation and cause an internal short.
  5. The voltage divider resistor in the NTC detection circuit on the main control board is shorted, or the ADC input pin has suffered electrostatic damage and is shorted to ground, permanently outputting a short signal.
  6. The wiring harness was pinched by a screw or clip during a previous repair, pressing two wires together and creating a short.

Self-Check Steps

  1. Disconnect power, unplug the NTC sensor connector at the main control board end, and inspect the inside of the connector for visible water stains or dampness.
  2. Locate the NTC sensor body (typically near the sump area), unplug the sensor-end connector, and check the metal terminals for moisture film or oxidation-induced conductive bridging between the pins.
  3. Use a multimeter in resistance mode to directly measure the NTC thermistor body: at room temperature the reading should be in the 10kΩ–50kΩ range; a reading near 0Ω indicates the thermistor is shorted and the NTC sensor must be replaced.
  4. Continuity-test each wire at both ends of the harness: the two conductors should show no continuity between them (infinite); any continuity means an internal wire short and the harness must be replaced.
  5. Use a hair dryer on the cool setting or compressed air to thoroughly dry the interior of both the sensor connector and harness connector; reconnect firmly once completely dry, then power on and test.
  6. If the NTC body and harness are both normal but the fault persists, the temperature detection circuit on the main control board is short-damaged — contact KitchenAid after-sales service for control board replacement.
