English
Meaning
The Robam induction cooktop has detected a short circuit in the IGBT temperature sensor (NTC1). The E3 error code indicates that the measured resistance of NTC1 is abnormally low (typically less than 1kΩ), corresponding to an extremely high or out-of-range temperature reading. NTC1 is a negative temperature coefficient thermistor mounted on the IGBT heatsink — its resistance decreases as temperature rises. When NTC1 is shorted, the control system misinterprets the IGBT as being in an extreme over-temperature state and triggers protective shutdown. While the physical failure mechanism differs from an open circuit, both result in loss of reliable temperature monitoring.
Common Causes
- The NTC1 component itself has suffered internal dielectric breakdown or package damage, causing a short between its leads.
- Excessive thermal grease or grease with conductive additives has seeped between the NTC1 pins during installation, creating a leakage path.
- The insulation on the NTC1 leads has worn through, and the exposed wire contacts the metal heatsink (ground), creating a short-to-ground.
- The insulation resistance between connector terminals has degraded due to moisture, salt air, or condensation, approaching a short-circuit condition.
- The filter capacitor at the NTC detection input on the main control board has broken down shorted, pulling the detection voltage low.
- Solder splashes or metal debris bridging the pins inside the NTC1 connector or header.
Self-Check Steps
- Disconnect the cooktop from power, unplug it, wait 5 minutes, then reconnect. If E3 clears, the issue may be intermittent moisture or contamination causing temporary insulation degradation.
- Wipe the bottom and surface of the cooktop with a dry cloth, especially around the NTC1 connector area, to remove any accumulated moisture or condensation, then retest.
- Use a multimeter in resistance mode to measure across the NTC1 leads. At room temperature, normal resistance should be between 5kΩ and 50kΩ. If the reading is near 0Ω or less than 1kΩ, NTC1 is shorted.
- Inspect the NTC1 leads for insulation damage where exposed wire might contact the heatsink or other grounded metal parts.
- NTC1 short circuit or voltage divider circuit faults require disassembly and professional diagnosis. Contact Robam after-sales service for inspection and component replacement.
