English
Meaning
The defrost sensor has failed. E4 indicates the defrost temperature sensor (which detects the evaporator surface temperature) detection loop is abnormal. The defrost sensor determines whether defrosting is complete. A fault may lead to uncontrolled defrost duration — insufficient defrost causes evaporator icing affecting cooling, or excessive defrost raises the fresh food compartment temperature.
Common Causes
- The defrost temperature sensor (typically attached to the freezer evaporator coil) is damaged — abnormal resistance.
- The sensor probe has detached from its fixed position on the evaporator and cannot accurately sense coil temperature.
- The sensor wire insulation has been melted by high temperature near the defrost heater.
- The sensor connector has poor contact or corrosion.
- The defrost sensor and freezer sensor are plugged into the wrong sockets, and the board reads incorrect data.
- The defrost sensor detection circuit on the main board is faulty.
Self-Check Steps
- After powering off, perform a full defrost (open the freezer door for 24 hours to allow all frost to completely melt), then power on again.
- After defrosting, locate the defrost sensor probe on the evaporator and ensure it is tightly secured to the evaporator coil.
- Check whether the sensor wire insulation shows signs of melting from the heater tube — if so, replace the sensor and route it away from the heater.
- Use a multimeter to measure sensor resistance; at 0°C it should be approximately 20kΩ–30kΩ. Replace if 0Ω or infinite.
- A defrost sensor fault may cause severe evaporator icing. If E4 persists after defrosting, contact TCL after-sales to replace the sensor.
